Munich’s 850th

A few weeks ago I got the city’s list of planned events in Munich for this year.  This is an important year for Munich as the city celebrates 850 years since its founding.  The actual founding day is June 14th, and so that weekend will be the most obvious time to see the celebrations.  Previous years I’ve seen the city’s founding weekend have quite the party all around the downtown area, but this year I guess I’m expecting more.  It’s hard to tell if it really will be much more than usual, but even if it’s just the usual, it’s still a very good time to be around downtown Munich.  For example, you should expect a stage with various performers at Marienplatz as well as a large setup of some kind at Odeonsplatz…and various things all over in between.

Again, the weekend of the city’s founding celebration is June 14th-15th.  I think I’ll take that weekend off as I should have visitors at that time anyways.

My next post will be on other events going on in 2008, hopefully coming to you tonight, but maybe tomorrow.  cheers.

Top 5 Churches in Munich

I know, I know…what’s with me dragging you to all the churches, right?
Well, for centuries the money for art and architecture flowed either to/from the Royalty or to/from the Church.
I think it’s time to cover a few of the churches that I think are the most impressive and worth seeing in the city of Munich (I’ll include the burbs too).
Here’s my top 5 churches to see while you’re in Munich:

1. The Asam Church (Asamkirche)
If you like Rococo, you’ll like this church, my personal favorite…although not on the route of most tours of the city.

2. Fürstenfeld Abbey
This one is visited by very few tourists a year in comparison to all the others on the list, mostly because it’s out in the burbs and not downtown Munich. However, it’s a beautiful church and well worth seeing.

3. St. Michael’s
Similar to one of my favorites in Rome, Il Gesu. Some just visit St. Michael’s for the crypt alone, but this church can be one of the highlights of a trip to Munich.

4. St. Peter’s
I feel guilty about not ranking this one higher, purely because of its importance to the city of Munich. This is my 2nd stop on all city tours for a reason!

5. Theatinerkirche
You might know it as “the yellow church in Munich” from other travelers, the crypt (only open in the summer) includes the first king of Greece, who was Bavarian…the brother of King Ludwig I.

…and as always, if you want the full story on these churches, take a tour or contact me directly…I find if I write too much on here about any specific church, I lose people’s interest.
As you can see these churches are all in the renaissance, baroque, or rococo styles. If you want to see Gothic or Romanesque: Munich is probably not the place to visit.

Munich votes for Obama

Last night was the official Democrats Abroad Munich primary vote…and with supposedly exactly 100 people turning up to vote.

 58 voted for Obama

41 voted for Clinton

1 for Edwards

Apparently, it was a much better turnout than any previous DA event in Munich, so that’s good news.  It turned into a party of course…and it was a damn good time.  I’m still recovering.

Earlier in the day I walked around Munich with a random Brazilian physiotherapist I happen to have run into.  Here’s some of the pics I took…as it was Fat Tuesday:

Hellabrunn Zoo

Sorry about not posting for a few days, I’d say I’ve been busy, but well…

Sunday we went to the Hellabrunn Zoo, here in Munich.  This is not necessarily what I’d send tourists to if they only have a few days, even a few weeks, in Munich…but yet it does come up every other month or so.  The zoo isn’t my favorite, but it’s not bad either.  It’s mostly outdoors, the animals have pretty good living conditions (quite a bit of space), and in the summer they look much happier.  This time, well, some are hibernating and others aren’t allowed out because they’d probably freeze to death.  So, they’re probably feeling a bit cooped up at the moment.

Highlights of the Hellabrunn Zoo for me always include the seals, sea lions, polar bears, and penguins. (in that order)

For those living in Munich, you can get a discount card like we have where you start saving € the third visit.  (basically half off)

Anyways, we went to the zoo…umm…today I had a very small tour, but it was nice…a woman from Norway and a woman from Argentina.  Fasching is in full swing.  Good times.

Mr. Rhino hanging out as close as he can to the visitors

A Penguin from Peru, I didn't even know they had'em in Peru.

The Third Reich, canceled private tour, & small groups

Well, things are going pretty good in my opinion.  Last night I went out for dinner as kind of a fare well dinner for one of the office people, Manu.  Her husband is one of the guides, so I’m sure I’ll still see her around sometimes.  She’ll be having a baby boy quite soon here, so she’ll take maybe a year off, which is quite normal here.  It was nice, but it’s always weird to sorta say good bye to people here as most of the expat community and tour guide community are not that permanent…just semi-permanent (usually at least a few years…but…not forever).

My tours have been very pleasant lately.  I had a castle tour which was mostly backpackers the other day, which is nice…they can be very entertaining, but they don’t tip.  That being said the very obviously well-to-do brits didn’t either.  Goes to show you never really know, which is why I try to go out of my way for everyone.  Good times, none the less.

I had a private tour scheduled Wednesday, but it appears a pipe burst in his kitchen wall.  That’s a sure thing to ruin a vacation 🙁  He won’t be coming over, so I think I’ll be travel writing instead.   It’s too bad as I was looking forward to the private tour.  I normally don’t do much in the way of Third Reich history on my tours, but have been re-reading much of the Third Reich information in preparation and got a new book on the subject as well, which I finished reading just recently.  Nothing really knew, but it’s good for a refresher sometimes.

Maybe he’ll visit next September or November and have better luck.

Also, it would have given me a reason to show someone the church of St. Anna, which I think is really cool as it was bombed…and restored…but they only had pictures in black and white…so when they re-did the church, the ceiling was restored…in black and white.  I think it’s neat.

I haven’t done what I’ll refer to now as my “super tour” in quite some time, as most people want a quick 2-hour tour.  To really properly see the city, I think you need a good 3 hours, if not more…depending on the group size, etc.  Two hours is never enough.

Today I had a group of 2.  From Milwaukee, even…so I got to rub it in that the packers just lost and yet I still got a good tip, haha.  No, really, they were a great “group”, interested in everything, no walking problems, no language problem (what’s the language difference from Milwaukee to Owatonna, really?), and yeah…it’s a beautiful day, so it was nice.

The royal tombs of the Scythians.

Well, today I had no tour…mid-winter like this it does happen, especially city tours, the full-day trips usually go, it’s just the two hour ones that for some reaon, people don’t turn up for if it’s cold.  Then again, my last city tour, on saturday, had a good size group…so go figure.

Anyways, yesterday Petra and I decided to go down to a special exhibit showing the royal tombs of the Scythians…whom we had never really heard of, which is interesting in itself.  If you are going to be in Munich in the next week, I HIGHLY recommend going to this exhibit, it was absolutely fascinating and I am very glad I went. Here’s the wiki article on the scythians.  Unfortunately they don’t allow cameras in there, so I don’t have any pictures for you.  I’d also like to point out they have a full mummy where you can even clearly see the tattoos.  Very disturbing and cool at the same time.

Yay, I had my first tour of the year…and we have little Axolotls

It was a weird tour, but at least it actually happened unlike the Salzburg tour the day before.  There is snow down at Neuschwanstein, but very little.  It was pretty warm and an overall pleasant day, it just seems really long when you’re out of practice because of a break like the holidays.

As many of you know, we have these Mexican amphibians known as axolotls.  They look like this:

Axolotls: Murphy & Lurchy

They were quite young then, but today they are apparently old enough to have young ones today, as last week we noticed Murphy was laying eggs! (until then, we still weren’t sure if she was a girl)

Here’s a pic of the eggs:

Axolotl eggs

Axolotl eggs

of course if we don’t rescue them, their parents will eat them…apparently similar to polar bears in Nürnberg.

Contest results are in…was your profile deleted?

Well, the results are in and although it appeared I had won…many of the e-mail addresses were seen as fake and so I now am left in 3rd place.  It’s still $80, so nothing to complain about, except that many of your accounts were probably deleted for no reason (though now you won’t have to worry about having your notification settings right so you don’t get mail from cosmotourist if I add anything, that’s one good plus).  Anyways, I got 3rd, which I’m happy about, that pays for a hotel room in Paris a couple nights.

 Thanks everyone who helped out!!

Paris

Have any of you ever been to Paris?

Every year Petra and I try to make at least one big trip, this year we have selected Paris.  We think it’s fitting seeing as Rome is the sister city of Paris and we had Rome as our 2007 choice.  We just bought our Fodor’s France for the trip, haven’t gotten it yet, we bought it off of Amazon as that’s the cheapest…and usually damn fast as well.  Why Fodor’s, you ask?  because from my experience (and yes, I believe I’ve read all the guide books on Germany at least…fairly extensively…extremely extensively on Bavaria)  Fodor’s is the best.  I can’t wait to start planning.

If you’ve been to Paris and you have any tips you think might be helpful, e-mail me!  nofxmike [at] gmail.com Thanks!

Cosmotourist, NYE, Christmas, and Tequila

I like that title.  Anyways, it looks like only a couple of you actually care enough to take 2-3 minutes out of your busy schedules to help a guy out to the tune of $400.  With 2 days left of the cosmotourist contest, I’m still ~5 short of winning 3rd, which would still be $80…but well…I don’t see those 5+ people actually appearing except in my dreams.

New Year’s Eve this year was quite different, we decided to stay at home.  We have an apartment on the 4th floor that has a great view for watching fireworks on NYE.  For those who don’t know, the entire country looks like a major war zone for a few hours in the early morning hours every year on NYE.  It’s the only time they’re legal and it is absolutely dangerous as all hell.  Good times.

Here’s what we used to blow crap up:

Our NYE fireworks

Of course I might as well mention Christmas too, we had a good Christmas.  We didn’t have any snow on Christmas, and just to clear this up for any tourists reading this:  I have spent a total of 6 Christmases in Germany and have NEVER had snow here during Christmas.

Now it’s time to get to that Tequila…tours for me start up again January 8th, when I head back over to Salzburg, followed the next day by Neuschwanstein.

Cosmotourist.com

Hey everybody,

I need some help.  As you know it’s christmas time and of course my income takes a hit during the winter months…and, honestly, most of you aren’t giving me any christmas presents, so I thought of a way you could give me something without much work.

I’m in a contest that if I win I get $400 to spend on travel…let’s say to the states to visit friends and relatives.  I REALLY want to visit the states, it’s just so damn expensive.  I need to get about 20 people to sign up on cosmotourist.com and “subscribe” to my posts on Germany.  You can easily turn off e-mail notices, etc. so that it’s no hassle to you at all and only takes a few minutes.

If you plan on going to Germany, reading some of my tips might be a good idea too…

Anyways, go to: www.cosmotourist.com and sign up.  Then, go to my profile:   http://www.cosmotourist.com/myct/profile/u/NOFXmike/t/ and on the left hand side you should see a link to click to subscribe.  Don’t click the one that says “all postings” click the one on Germany, please.  Otherwise I don’t get credit 🙁

I really will win $400 if I get 20 of you to do this, so you can look at it as giving me like $20 each as a christmas present!  The contest ends January 6th…so please…

sign up

then, subscribe:

Movie about guides?

So, I was given a tip to check out the trailer for a new movie about tour guides in Berlin called “Guides”.  I watched the trailer and it’s absolutely hilarious to me…it might not be to all, but worth at least checking out if you want to know what I deal with here in Munich.

The movie is a comedy “mockumentary” about the politics of tours in Berlin.  The main guy you see in the trailer is based on a guy I’ve met here in Munich a few times, his name is Chris and he runs a company that gives free advertisement heavy tours which are scripted by, apparently, a 12 year old.  Anyways,  of other two characters in the trailer I recognize one, and from the trailer at least the film maker did a really good job.  I can’t wait to see it.  The politics of tours here is disturbing yet can be entertaining if you distance yourself from it.  Anyways, check out these links:

Rainy days in Munich

Everyone and their dog seems to be telling me how much snow MN has gotten, but what we’ve got here is what we have normally about this time of year, temps hovering just above freezing and a constant drizzle…making for general misery.

That being said, tomorrow I’m going to Neuschwanstein most likely with 20 very random new friends from 10 different countries…all pretty miserable about the weather, but kind of in awe of the palace none the less.

If there are any random readers out there that have never been to Munich, I also want to mention that I do private tours as well, if you have odd interests for example or just want a more casual or lengthier tour, I’m your man.  Recently I was talking to other guides about top sights of the Munich area that just don’t get tourists, I’d love to take tourists to these places, but the tourists only have 2 days in town total and they’re going to Neuschwanstein with one of them, so what do you do?

For any friends/family, please understand that Petra and I have to figure out our vacations by the end of January, so if you intend to visit us or stay at our place or whatever…unfortunately we’re not that flexible after Feb 1st…before that time, we can take a few days off or whatever for free private tours no problem.

Am I the only one who wishes Led Zepplin would die already?

Just checking in

Hola everybody,

Let’s see, on Tuesday I had a Salzburg tour, a pretty good size group, but only a so-so tour from my point of view.  I guess partly because of the crap weather.  Wednesday I went postering around Munich, and the same for Thursday.  Today, I decided to try out visiting a German dentist.  Well, sorta.

Since I don’t have dental insurance, I decided to head over to the Dental college and see what they could do.  Well, it only cost me €25, however, they only put in a “temporary filling”…so I’ll have to go to a normal dentist for that *sigh*.

I went out drinking with Brendan (office manager, dachau tour guide) last night…that was actually weird, not our most fun night out, but always good to get out and have a few with Brendan.  Apparently he wasn’t feeling that great toward the end *cough*

Our tour office has been ripped apart for the last month or more due to a rat…it’s being put together now, but still not close to done from what I’ve seen.  It’s kind of weird because we’re working out of our old office, which is just next door, but it’s no where near as flashy, hidden being our bike rental sorta.  Although this year’s season is long gone, my tours have been pretty sizable lately and I don’t see any real downturn there…which is good.  Lots of planning to do for next year, who knows what we’ll do as we prepare for yet another round with the various evil competitors…but I think the past year was pretty good overall, and certainly I did better than ever…I like doing better each year, it gives me a feeling of accomplishment, even if I didn’t make that much, it’s more than last year.

busy, busy.

Ok, let’s talk about cars

As I’ve mentioned before, cars seem to be a topic that pops up all the time on tours, partly because we’re walking along the streets a lot I suppose.  Anyways, the comments people make are quite interesting.  Americans seem to expect all European cars to be tiny.  Hell, Germans expect European cars to be tiny.  What you see when you walk down the street is a different story though.  I’ve done this many times…why don’t you try it and report back:  walk down a street downtown wherever you live and note the general make of we’ll say 20 cars.  Just note the # of doors and approximate size.

I’m guessing you’ll have a fair mix, if you’re in the states there will be a truck or two in there, a few SUV’s, and a good number of cars. (seriously, if you do this, let me know your results, I’m interested)  Guess what you get in Munich?  almost the same, granted, they’re BMW’s and Mercedes…but the same size.

The next question people ask:  so BMW’s must be so much cheaper here, right?  wrong.  They’re about the exact same, give or take a couple grand. (at their costs, 1 or two thousand isn’t much of a difference imo)

SO, how do people afford them?  well, quite a damn few are company cars, others, well…there’re people living in debt here just like there.

Now, on to the pictures.  Since my tours are obviously in the downtown areas of Salzburg and Munich, I see a lot of damn nice cars regularly (especially in Munich).  Sometimes I take pictures of them…

BMW Z8

The first one is a BMW Z8.  It’s a personal favorite with 400hp and no weight.  It was built for 3 years, for a total of 5, 703…I think about 500 of them are in town here.

late 50's corvette?

I love vettes.  This one parked right next to me, so I had to snap a quick one.

Lotus Elise III

Lotus Elise III

Anyways, the Z8 is rather normal around here…the other two are not.  The point is, we’ve got just as many SUV’s and 4-door cars as you do…in fact, we have so many damn station wagons it’s sickening.  I hate station wagons…

Happy thanksgiving weekend

OK, so I’m a bit late on posting happy thanksgiving, so I added “weekend”.  What have I been busy with?  Well, not much as I’ve been home sick, umm…Civilization IV has kept me busy, with this new computer it is just FLYING.  I’m loving the new computer.  Anyways, other than that I’ve been writing travel tips for a website…and umm…drinking mango juice.  I love mango juice.

At least several dozen times in the last few years people wanted to have a lengthy discussion about the cars here in Munich.  I intend to have a proper post on this, and by posting this first, hopefully I’ll remember to actually get the pics together to properly write on this topic…so look for that on Sunday.

In the meantime, try to stay away from shopping malls, they’re full.

Sick again? crap…no…

My nose is running like you wouldn’t believe, but only out the one side.

Anyways, I think I’m sick again, I believe this is already the 2nd time since I started this blog that I’m sick…that’s not good.  Well, it is more or less as far as tours are concerned that the tourist season is over.  I’m on the once or twice a week I have a tour thing at the moment, so I’ve been wandering around Munich with ~150 posters a day instead.  Oh well.

On a positive note, the tours that I have been getting have gone really well.  My last tour, on Saturday, was to Neuschwanstein.  I had people from 9 different countries on the tour…oh, wait, 10 countries.  Two of the guys who claimed to be American turned out to be Mexican…it took several hours to get that out of them.  However, that certainly explained why their English wasn’t perfect.  They were cool, we talked talked politics and agreed on about everything. (one was from Tijuana one L.A.  ….but neither were U.S. citizens, technically) (also I want to note I was asked to not include tour numbers anymore…so now you’re gonna have to guess based on the # of countries represented!)

I believe Petra and I will get our new computers either tomorrow or the next day, so that means a hell of a lot of work needs to be done to transfer data to the new HD, reformat my biggest current drive for Petra…and well…re-install every program.  I made a list of things I need to install immediately, it’s over 30 progs…then there’s gonna be random other ones that I’ll need to install whenever I get around to it of course *cough*.

Check this out, I had a good laugh.
